WHY CHOOSE COUNSELLING

At some points in our lives, it can feel as if circumstances conspire against us. We have bereavements, relationships problems, work problems, house moves, general stress and anxiety, divorce and depression to name but a few.

Most people handle a major crisis but the minor problem which follows seems to poleaxe them - why?

It is a bit like using balance weight cooking scales. You can add flour and the scales gradually get to the balance point, then you add a small quantity and it sinks down quickly.

That's what happens when we have major issues, we pile things on, until it is impossible to maintain the balance anymore.

Big or small issues?

Many people thinking about coming for counselling may feel that their problem is not serious enough. Clients often say "its silly but, this is upsetting me, but it's not child abuse or violence, it's only....."

If this is getting in the way of you feeling OK about how your life is, then the scale of the problem is not for debate. Any problem, big or small, deserves attention. In counselling the scale may be only how much time it takes for you to feel more in control of your life or emotions.

Some people come for counselling for a short time, for 4 to 12 weeks; other people come from 6 months to a year. For some coming for over a year and longer suits them. Everyone is different and the time you need is a judgement you can make with your counsellor.
